Most organizations struggle with the challenges of application and product development and delivery. Lifecycle virtualization fundamentally transforms the lifecycle and eliminates many of the common challenges faced by development and test teams. The stunning success of server virtualization technology in limiting server sprawl, reducing energy consumption, and lowering capital expenditures (CAPEX) raises the question—what can we virtualize next? The answer is almost anything and everything—especially in the lifecycle. Lifecycle virtualization and its associated technologies assist development, test, and operations teams in cutting the Gordian Knot of schedule, cost, and quality.

In 2012, voke published economic models to evaluate the hidden costs of software projects.  Our key findings show that since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2009, the average cost of software projects is rising dramatically, this is in spite of smaller teams working shorter durations.  At the same time, rework costs remain high or unknown and high profile software failures continue to make headlines daily.

Organizations must understand how defects create a hidden cost of rework in every software project and how these costs manifest differently in Agile and Non-Agile projects. Given the impact of catastrophic software failures on the brand, we should be witnessing a movement toward increased quality, not a reactionary call for more testing after the software has shipped.

Software engineering professionals are familiar with the concept of Cost of Quality, or more specifically, the cost involved with removing defects, essentially the cost of “rework.” The premise of this concept is that the later in the lifecycle a defect is identified, the more expensive it is to resolve the issue.

With the failure of www.HealthCare.gov, US taxpayers will pay the price for the cost of rework.  Modern tools such as service virtualization enable early testing of incomplete or unavailable components and systems to help mitigate potential risks of production failures.

Uncovering defects earlier in the software lifecycle saves time and money. In today’s environment where businesses and governments run on software, removal of defects related to requirements is essential to eliminating the risk of exponential cost overruns and schedule delays.

Collaboration and availability is essential prior to beginning development. It is much less expensive and easier to meet, discuss, review, and refine to ensure that requirements are properly defined and communicated than to change the code at a later point in the project.

Effective collaboration and test coverage of key requirements is essential. Make sure you invest properly in architecture, requirements, design, and quality practices that prevent the release of catastrophic failures.
Tips to avoid catastrophic failures:

Most importantly, understand the business risks of prioritizing schedule to the exclusion of quality and ultimately cost. Empower your test organization to protect your brand from catastrophic failures.

Look at new and emerging technologies that are proven and successful to add to the workbench of the test professional

Software runs the business. The modern testing organization aspires to be a change agent and to be an inspiration for quality throughout the entire lifecycle. To be a change agent, the testing organization must have the right people and skill sets, the right processes in place to ensure proper governance, and the right technology to aid in the delivery of software in support of the line of business. Traditionally, testing organizations have focused on the people and process aspect of solving quality issues. With the ever-increasing complexity of the software needed to run the enterprise, testing professionals must investigate and adopt technology to help them solve some of the most challenging quality issues ever. In short, testing organizations must make the move to extreme automation and become proficient with modern tooling and its benefits. In this session, Theresa Lanowitz looks at new and emerging technologies that are proven and successful to add to the workbench of the test professional.

You will learn:

  • The concept of extreme automation and the necessity to automate throughout the software lifecycle
  • The category of lifecycle virtualization and how virtualization technology in the pre-production portion of the lifecycle helps to remove constraints associated with cost, quality, and schedule
  • The category of development testing and how shifting testing left in the software lifecycle pays dividends throughout the life of the application

Join voke's Theresa Lanowitz at the AppDevTrends Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on 12/10/14 at 4:00pm - 5:15pm.

Learn why line of business involvement is critical to the success of any software project

The world is moving at the speed of software. The business, in its never-ending quest to be more competitive, demands everything faster. While this may seem like a new way of life, this demand from the business is not new. What is new is how we are dealing with the demands of the business – through managing the cost, quality, and schedule of software. We live in a world where we are constantly barraged with sound bites and are warned that if we do not release software every seven seconds, our 100-plus year old company is going to be in the dustbin of companies that were.

How do we survive and thrive in this era of sound bites while delivering value to the business and protecting the brand of our organization? How do we really manage cost quality and schedule? Where are the hidden costs coming from in our software projects? What does the cost of rework really mean?

You will learn:

  • How the defects create the hidden cost of rework in every software project
  • Why line of business involvement is critical to the success of any software project
  • Why it is necessary to go beyond the sound bite and really understand the impact of decisions
